Nā Lima ALOHA (THE HANDS THAT LOVE)
Nā Lima Aloha was established in July 2004 as a community service to support various organizations and agencies throughout Oahu and to support relief operations in other areas as well. Through the donations of smaller-sized quilts, we share our aloha with displaced, needy, or critically ill children and adults. Organizations we have contributed to in the past include various senior citizen convalescent homes, the Veterans Administration Center for the Aging, hospitals, abuse shelters, and foster care facilities. In the past year we have donated over 300 items throughout the island. Fabric donations are always welcome, so please contact our Arlene Adams or Linda Dayag if you’d like to contribute!
Several people asked about sizes of quilts. Linda made the following suggestions:
Adult (male/female) 36 x 36 (comfort quilts for palliative care at Straub Hospital. Size is per their request);
Children 42 x 48; Adults (Leahi Hospital) 52 x 62; Vets 60 x 70. These are suggestions; they can be slightly
larger or smaller (but nothing smaller than 36 x 36)
Latest news….
We received the following during March: Jeannie Salmon – 4 quilts and quilted 4 Na Lima quilts; Sandy Choy – 7 quilts; Nita Jandayan (former guild member) – 42 bears. Mary Wunsch made the following deliveries: Children’s Justice Center – 10 quilts; Shriner’s Hospital – 10 quilts. Margaret Teruya delivered 14 small quilts and 3 flannel blankets to Kapiolani Hospital palliative care unit.
Thank you to all who came to our National Quilt Day on March 22. I collected 30 pillowcases and 17 quilt tops at the end of the day. A special thank you to Devon; I gave her 87 10” miscellaneous Hawaiian fabric squares and she organized them into 4 beautiful quilt tops. Margaret collected lots of skirts and dresses along with passing out fabric for quilters to take home. Well done, quilters! I am looking forward to doing this again.

Shoebox Project
One of Hawaii Quilt Guild’s on-going charity opportunities is the Shoebox Project*. Each year volunteers all around the country gather to fill small boxes with gifts, toys, and necessities for children in need. Several thousand boxes are packed in Hawaii each November. How can you help this project? Pick up a project kit at the next Guild meeting. Sewing projects include simple quilted hearts, stuffed fabric fish, shorts, dresses, and skirts. The patterns and instructions are easy to follow even for beginning sewers. Every little bit helps when teams of volunteers gather to pack the Shoeboxes. At the June meeting the Shoebox Donation basket was filled to the brim with donations including: chubby stuffed fish, colorful knit caps and washcloths, transparent pill bottles to use for sewing kits, colorful cards, and notepads. Thank you, quilters. Be mindful that donations need to be clean, usable, and ready for the volunteers to select as they pack each child’s gift box. *To learn more about the Shoebox Project and see an extensive list of requested donations: https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/pack-a-shoe-box.
Bountiful Shoebox donations were created at the March 22 Quilt Day event. Random scraps were quickly turned into Shoebox treasures including: 18 skirts, 22 small drawstring bags, 8 dresses with matching scrunchies, 3 pairs of shorts with pockets, and a school of color fish. Additional donations were collected at the March meeting. Visit the Shoebox table at the April meeting to see samples and select patterns and instructions for the projects.
Thank you to everyone who helped! The need is great, and the donations from the Hawaii Quilt Guild are always appreciated. Donations to fill this year’s boxes are welcome at every meeting through October.
